Postural Management for People with Complex Disabilities (4 Day)
(Attendees should have some previous experience in seating assessments)

Outcomes:
The course is delivered over four days and uses a mix of theoretical and practical sessions to provide an introduction to the posture management of a severely disabled person which is vital in optimising the remaining function ability of the person, but also in minimising secondary complications associated with their condition.
The main topics covered are as follows:
- The principles of biomechanics as applied to posture management;
- The meaning of posture;
- The principles of building a stable posture in sitting and lying and the practical application;
- The need to collect all of the data on the Management of Physical Disability 24-7 (MPD 24-7) assessment form, sequentially;
- The skills needed to record, on the MPD 24-7, notation of body configuration in sitting and lying and passive range of joint movement using the 0-neutral method;
- The critical points and measures that must be considered, to facilitate optimal support and/or accommodation within equipment

Outcomes: Be Able:
- To use the procedure to measure the Goldsmith Indices of Body Symmetry.
- To set up the subject in the starting position to identify whether the pelvis is structurally symmetrical.
- To measure and record dimensions of the chest, with the pelvis level.
- To establish how the pelvis moves in relation to movement of the legs.
- To measure and record the extent of right and left hip abduction combined with external rotation.
- Know how to develop appropriate reporting strategies to support implementation of a postural care regime.
Postural Care in the Seated Position

Outcomes:
- Provide the individual with the skills to carry out a seating assessment, document and interpret the findings in order to provide appropriate recommendations and interventions;
- Increase sensitivity to the early signs of asymmetry relative to the seated posture and raiseawareness of the processes of its development;
- Enable the individual and his/her first circle of support to plan appropriate seating interventions as part of their postural care on the objective measurements.
- Enable learners to develop their skills and knowledge to deliver locally sustainable, person-centred Postural Care services;
- Support longer term employability for those involved in the provision of health and social care;
- Ensure quality assured and regulated training for health and social care practitioners.
